EXPO 2025 CO-DESIGN PROJECT

Visual Design

Circulation of Lives

Circulation of Lives

The visual design of the EXPO venue is based on the concept of the “Circulation of Lives” and the design policy of the EXPO 2025 Design System. We have designed the entire venue by reimagining it as an ecosystem of the future.

In this ecosystem, all living things from humans, animals, insects, plants, to natural things like stones and water, as well as existences generated through artificial intelligence and biotechnology are regarded as “Lives.” We showcase a future in which we live together, blending together and resonating with each other.

As the world is becoming divided and confrontational, we envision a future where countless lives come together, connect, circulate, and create something new through this open design platform of co-creation.
This vision must be a life-centric future, in which neither nature, system, nor humans exclusively dominate.

EXPO 2025 Design System

What is Co-MYAKU? —Nickname of the Design Element ID

Co-MYAKU is the nickname of the Design Element ID that was invented as a symbol of life in the EXPO 2025 Design System.
That element was originally designed as part of the EXPO 2025 Design System, and netizens gradually started calling it “Co-MYAKU.” Now, Co-MYAKU is beloved by many creators and artists.
Co-MYAKU can be transformed into many different forms, symbolizing diverse individualities and their connections. Mutated Co-MYAKU characters pop up across the EXPO 2025 venue and breathe life into each area.
On this website, we call this Design Element ID by its nickname, “Co-MYAKU.”

EXPO2025 Dressing

Countless lives illuminate the venue, as well as the future.

The EXPO venue on Yumeshima Island is decorated with various monuments, flags, signs and art works. Each item and art piece looks so animated that they energize the entire venue.
This venue is designed as an open platform where diverse lives and worlds resonate and mingle.

Since ancient times, people in Japan have believed that everything has its own soul. We expand that idea into the modern perspective, and design an energized landscape through the collaborations of many artists and creators. These monuments and art pieces are more than just designs—they are guideposts that lead visitors to the future.

EXPO 2025 Monument

The EXPO 2025 monument stands against the Water Plaza at the heart of the venue. This bold and iconic monument welcomes visitors from around the world and encourages them to encounter the unknown and create memories from this point.
Each letter is crafted using a specially designed typeface. The letters also resemble transformed Co-MYAKU creatures, which are organic life forms. The whole design looks radiant as if it is full of energy and vitality.

MYAKU-MYAKU Monument “Welcome”

A large seated statue of MYAKU-MYAKU, bowing while sitting on its heels, welcomes visitors at the East Gate. This monument, embodying the spirit of warm hospitality, was inspired by Fukusuke dolls, which have long been cherished in Japan as lucky charms that bring happiness.
As well as its traditional Japanese welcoming style, the statue’s base and surrounding signage are also designed using Japanese-themed elements. It warmly embraces people from all around the world.

MYAKU-MYAKU Monument “Exciting”

The tall standing statue of MYAKU-MYAKU with its arms wide open welcomes visitors arriving through the West Gate. This posture is called “Ring Touch Pose,” as the statue looks as if it reaches out its hand to touch the Grand Ring. With its body turned toward the Grand Ring and head half-looking back toward visitors, the statue expresses a warm message: “Welcome to the Grand Ring!”
This is a perfect place for taking pictures to remember. Try recreating MYAKU-MYAKU’s pose and capturing the exciting atmosphere that fills the venue.

Banner Flags

These unique banner flags are designed based on a design element, called “WORLD,” in the EXPO 2025 Design System. Fluttering in the wind, they carry the message, “Every life is unique and diverse.”
As the flags are color-coded, corresponding with the venue maps and signage design, visitors can intuitively understand which area they’re in by looking at the color of the flags. As the wind moves the flags, they not only navigate visitors but also breathe life into the venue.

2.5-D Monuments

In the EXPO 2025 Design System, a symbolic design element, called “WORLD,” expresses a future ecosystem where diverse lives blend and resonate together. These four kinds of 2.5-dimensional monuments are created by using the “WORLD” design element and giving it a physical form.
As these monuments are installed across the venue as photo spots, visitors can take pictures, posing in front of, behind, or among them. Visitors may feel as if they too become part of the design system, experiencing firsthand the open design that expands through co-creation and participation.

3-D Monument

In the EXPO 2025 Design System, a design element, called “GROUP,” symbolizes a community where diverse lives come together to co-create the future.
Visitors from across the world come to these three-dimensionally shaped cell-like forms and curious spongy ground. They can then sense how the co-creation in the future society feels.

3-D Plaything Monument

This large, soft playground equipment is inspired by an eye-like cell appearing in the EXPO 2025 Design System. As it is made from cushiony materials, everyone is welcome to play on this, climbing up and bouncing on it.
In this playful space, everyone can feel both excitement and the rhythm of life.

Fence Covers

The designs of these fence covers are generated based on one of the EXPO 2025 Design System’s design elements, called “WORLD.” As these patterned graphic designs don’t contain cell elements, the abstract, character-free flags harmonize with the space while creating a visual impact.
These flags function as partition covers while adding decoration and rhythm to the venue.

Belt Barriers

Belt barriers are used to organize lines or guide crowds. These belt barriers at the EXPO venue are designed based on one of the EXPO 2025 Design System’s design elements, called “WORLD.” By extracting the core part of the graphic design and repeating the pattern, these practical barriers with visual consistency are created to add vibrancy and harmony to the venue.

Co-MYAKU Sign

Guiding you to an exciting future.

These playful signs at the venue are designed for children. Many Co-MYAKU characters, which embody the philosophy of EXPO 2025, pique children’s curiosity and guide them through the venue. They also work as navigators to help children discover possibilities that lead to the future.
The signs have gimmicks designed to grab children’s attention and encourage them to play. They reference children’s traditional games, such as hopscotch, amidakuji, or ladder lottery, pair matching (looking for two items forming a set), ambigrams (letters or shapes that can have different meanings depending on the viewer’s orientation). Some signs are also designed according to a story.

Co-MYAKU '25

Lives, here and there.

Co-MYAKU Sign’25 is an art project through which we work on creating diverse “Lives” at the EXPO venue together with 25 artists.
The term “Co-MYAKU” is coined by combining “Co-“ from co-creation and “Myaku” meaning life and pulses in Japanese. The term also refers to the EXPO 2025 Design System’s Design Element ID, called Co-MYAKU, which embodies each individual living thing.
Artists demonstrate their individualities and techniques, and depict their own characters on the walls and floors across the EXPO venue, using the Co-MYAKU element.
Their works are more than just designs or decorations at the venue. This is an attempt to co-create a future form of living things through collaborations of diverse talent.
Through this project, we strive to expand the “Circulation of Lives” into the future, and into the world.
